The CAHSS IT team serves as a central point of contact for IT concerns for all departments, programs, centers and institutes in the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. Our services are available to all CAHSS faculty and staff to help you with your daily IT needs as well as your long term IT goals.

Our Services

We recognize that your IT needs are as unique and varied as the departments you represent. Our goal is to help you with project planning, project management and decision-making to ensure cost-effective and successful outcomes.

Some of the services we provide include:

  • Hardware troubleshooting and support for UMBC-owned computers within CAHSS departments, including desktop computers as well as some IT equipment located within CAHSS-controlled labs, classrooms and instructional spaces. Personally owned equipment, devices and software are not supported.
  • Software troubleshooting and support for institutionally licensed software and software purchased by a CAHSS department.
  • Hardware and software purchasing consultations and recommendations for individuals, departments and labs
  • New computer setup
  • Technical support for online events
  • Training on IT topics by request
  • Departmental website consultation

Minimum Required Hardware for New Computer Purchases

For faculty and staff:


MacBook Pro (MacBook Air and the 24 inch iMac are not supported; larger iMac is not recommended for individual use)

Minimum specifications:

      • Apple M1 or M2 chip
      • Minimum 16 GB unified memory
      • Minimum 256 GB solid state (SSD) hard drive
      • Apple Care Protection Plan
      • Recommended that faculty purchase video adapters for both HDMI and VGA for use in classrooms


Dell Laptop (desktop models are not recommended for individual use)

Minimum specifications:

      • Core i7 or higher Processor
      • Minimum 16 GB RAM
      • Minimum 256 GB minimum solid state (SSD) hard drive
      • Touch enabled screen
      • 802.11 ac wireless card + Bluetooth (internal)
      • 3 year ProSupport Plus warranty with accidental damage protection (all warranty repairs are handled directly with Dell)
      • Recommended that faculty purchase video adapters for both HDMI and VGA for use in classrooms
