“HOUSE OF CARDS” CREATOR/SHOWRUNNER TO SPEAK

Beau Willimon, the mind behind ruthless Senator (now President) Frank Underwood and his wife Claire, and Frank’s coldly calculating chief of staff, will speak on Sunday, October 26 at 3 PM at Brown Memorial Park Avenue Presbyterian Church, 1316 Park Avenue, in the Bolton Hill section of Baltimore.  He will speak about filmmaking and about issues of power and faith in the award-winning political drama, several scenes of which were filmed in the historic church.

Tickets to this Tiffany Series event are $15 ($5 for students) and are available in advance (recommended) at: www.browndowntown.org, as well as at the door.  Parking and shuttle service from the parking lot will be available.

Willimon is the creator of Netflix’s original series, for which he serves as showrunner and executive producer. He has also written some celebrated episodes.

House of Cards recently made television history, earning nine Emmy nominations, including Best Drama, the first online streaming show to ever be so honored. It earned four Golden Globe nominations, including "Best Television Series, Drama.”

In addition to his career as a writer and producer, Willimon worked on a number of political campaigns, including Chuck Schumer’s 1998 senate race, Bill Bradley’s 2000 presidential race, Hillary Clinton’s 2000 senate race and Howard Dean’s 2004 presidential race.

Willimon, who earned an M.F.A. from Columbia University in 2003, began his career as a playwright.  Both “Lower Ninth” (2008) and “Spirit Control” (2010) were performed in the U.S. and abroad.  His play “Farragut North” became the basis for the motion picture screenplay “Ides of March,” which he co-wrote with George Clooney and Grant Heslove.  “Ides of March” earned Willimon Academy Award, Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay.

The Tiffany Series, sponsor of this event, is named for the Brown Memorial's unparalleled collection of 11 original Tiffany stained glass windows.  Event proceeds support the church's Tutoring Program, now in its 50th year.
