Before permission to search for a position is granted, each department must make a search request to the Dean’s Office, who then secures approval for the searches from the Provost’s Office. Such requests (see form below) may be in the form of a memo, or an email sent directly to Lisa Thomas with a “cc” to the contact Associate Dean.
Requests are usually due by early December and are typically granted in reaction to departmental retirements and/or resignations (contingent upon ongoing and demonstrable need), or as part of a multi-year hiring plan. The Dean’s Office typically responds with their response by mid-February. A template for such requests is provided here.
Departments granted a search from the Dean are asked in their notification to alert the Dean’s Office if there are any special start up needs above the standard startup allotment. The reason for this is so the Dean can make the request and so that the Provost can budget appropriately for the expense. Departments that do not make such requests are not guaranteed further requests will be met.
Departments that find themselves in immediate need for a full teaching load as a result of a recent change in staffing may request a visiting lecturer line using the template above.
