Phase III Chesapeake Bay Watershed Implementation Plan

Academic credit for this internship
is available through POLI 448. Contact Dr. Laura Hussey (lhussey@umbc.edu)
for information.

Description:

The Phase III Chesapeake Bay Watershed Implementation Plan (Phase III WIP)
has been in a planning stage for most of 2018 and must be finalized by
August 2019.  The intern will assist with the compilation of data and
technical documents as well as drafting of the Phase III WIP.   In
addition, the intern will be expected to assist with addressing comments
from the April/May 2019 public comment review process of the Draft Phase
III WIP, which are expected be numerous and from a wide spectrum of
stakeholders, including individual citizens, local governments,
environmental groups (NGOs), all the way up through the Governor's Office.

Provide assistance with researching issues that are the subject of
legislation introduced during the 2019 legislative session.  Occasionally
issues arise that are unexpected and we need quick research conducted on.
For instance, a couple years ago legislation was introduced on microbeads
in personal care products.  Our intern quickly researched information on
the latest science, national trends, and legislation throughout the
country and world.

Regulations - regulation promulgation is placed on hold for approximately
the first two months of the year while the legislature is in session.
However, we continue to work on regulations so that once we are able to
submit regulations again they are ready to go.  The intern could assist
with some light research of COMAR and assist in drafting regulation
packages.

Qualifications: Juniors and above with interests in State and local
politics and environmental
policy and strong writing skills.

Send resume and a cover letter that includes information about personal
