Emeritus Prof. La Noue publishes on diversity in higher ed.
New article examines the diversity and inclusion movement
George R. La Noue, Emeritus Professor of Political Science and Public Policy has published an article titled “Diversity and Exclusion" in a recent edition of Academic Questions.
In this article, Professor La Noue examines the political context of the diversity and inclusion movement that has swept American higher education. He affirms that “No students, staff or faculty should be excluded from campus activities because of their identities, though their behaviors or ideas should not be off-limits to critical comments.” In his article, La Noue explains that use of diversity and inclusion criteria in selection processes, however, can lead to exclusion of persons because they are consider over represented or their religious or political identities are not among preferred diverse categories. La Noue faults universities for not having candid public discussions about the definition and application of the diversity and inclusion rules they are applying and how they are consistent with civil rights laws.
