About Initiatives for Identity, Inclusion & Belonging (i3b)

i3b is a department within the Division of Student Affairs. We work with faculty, staff, and students to develop the knowledge, awareness, and skills to cultivate an inclusive and social justice-oriented campus community. We ground everything we do in an ethic of radical love and belonging, affirming the multiple, diverse, and intersecting identities of UMBC students as we work to create spaces where they feel seen and celebrated. Students, staff, and faculty can connect with us through one of three identity-based centers: The Mosaic: Center for Cultural Diversity, The Pride Center, and The Gathering Space for Spiritual Well-Being, curated training and dialogue opportunities, or by visiting our website: i3b@umbc.edu.

Extra Credit Opportunities

As a department, we offer workshops, dialogue, and training opportunities for our campus community, including How to Be Better Ally, Interact Dialogues Program, MultiCultural Leadership Experience, and SafeZone and FaithZone training. All of our interactive learning opportunities are designed to expand knowledge of self and others, develop social justice competencies, practice new skills, and build a sense of belonging.

This semester each center will offer identity-based programming. You can view center-specific calendars by following our MyUMBC page. In addition to center-based programs, you might consider recommending the following programs as extra credit for your students:

Building Community and Belonging

In addition to interactive learning experiences, i3b helps students make connections, build community, and find belonging. Through a variety of social connection opportunities, casual lounging, and opportunities to "break bread" together, students can build new relationships with others and be celebrated for who they are. Please encourage students to visit us in each of our individual spaces outlined below:

*In addition to the Gathering Space, students can learn more about i3b's Prayer Meditation and Reflection rooms across campus by visiting our website: https://i3b.umbc.edu/spaces/prayer-meditation-and-reflection-spaces/
