3 Days of Celebration!!! Africana Studies Dept Turns 50

The Africana Studies 50th Anniversary and the 44th Annual W.E.B. Du Bois Lecture, November 9-11, 2022

November 9 at 5-8 p.m. , University Center Ballroom: The 44th Annual W.E.B. Du Bois Distinguished Lecture with special keynote addresses by UMBC alumna and former professors, Dr. Christel Temple, '94, and Mr. Donald G. Murray, Jr. They will speak on the respective topics of "Cultural Memory and Mythology: Africana Agency in the Face of Exile" and "Africana Studies: Creating a Program Space and Place at UMBC and the Greater Baltimore and Washington, D.C. Communities."


November 10 at 4-7 p.m.,  Albin O. Kuhn Library Room 767 Roundtable discussions with AFST current students, alumni, and faculty. This event will also include the showing of a 50th anniversary video (run time appx. 50 mins). Register for Roundtable discussions here.  
Since packaged meals will be served, we need a headcount. UMBC students who plan to attend should email wsoares@umbc.edu by Wednesday, Nov. 2.

November 11 at 6-9 pm, Skylight, The Commons: The Anniversary Gala. See the information below.

The special gala event includes remarks from current and former departmental faculty, staff, students, and alumni; performances; showing of a video; dinner, and dancing.

Tickets: $50 per person (limit two)

UMBC students are not to purchase any ticket. An interested student needs to email wsoares@umbc.edu by November 6 to reserve one of the available 20 seats for students.

Your ticket includes a seated dinner and a drink ticket.

A cash bar will also be available.
