POLI 439: Special Topics in Public Law
Topic: Ending juvenile mass incarceration through public policy
Notes: This class will explore the role and function of the juvenile justice system and how structural as well as policy-based reforms have resulted in lower incarceration rates for youth in Maryland. We will explore strategies as they exist around the country and engage in discussion on their effectiveness and impact on public safety in Maryland through a race equity lens.
The course will be co-taught by Sam Abed, Secretary of the Department of Juvenile Services (DJS) in Baltimore and Betsy Tolentino, Deputy Secretary of Community Operations for DJS
