Description
The UMBC community and the public are invited to The Mathematics of Being Human, a new one-act play by Michele Osherow (English) and Manil Suri (Math). The play, directed by Alan Kreizenbeck, will be presented as a staged-reading in the Black Box Theatre, located in the Performing Arts & Humanities Building (PAHB) on November 4, 2014, at 7:30 PM. This reading will be followed by a "talk-back." Admission is free.
Synopsis: "Battle lines are drawn when an English professor and mathematician are compelled to co-teach a course at a university bent on promoting interdisciplinarity. They tussle over everything: from the value of 'nothing' in King Lear, tot he fractals found in cauliflower. Will they be able to give the class a glimpse of synthesis or will their insularity prove impossible to surmount?"
The play was inspired by Osherow and Suri's experiences co-teaching a seminar for the Humanities Scholars Program. It was also developed through a Dresher Center for the Humanities Faculty Working Group.
