Description

Dr. Eric Crawford, an expert on the Gullah Geechee culture, will be visiting UMBC give a workshop to our choirs.

This is part of a project by a team of friends from Ghana representing West Africa, St. Thomas and St. Croix representing the Caribbean, and UMBC representing the United States. We will be sharing stories of shared experience through music, dance, art and film.

The Atlantic slave trade impacted all these places and its impact on the Africans and African-Americans is still very present in our cultures today.

We will celebrate the resilience of these Africans through the art of song, dance and film. This semester, our UMBC choral students will learn history of and experience the Gullah Geechee culture through performing the Ring Shout and learning Gullah Geechee songs from this period as well as learning and performing traditional spirituals.
