Description

Baltimore Dance Project presents a thrilling program that displays an eclectic range of work and performances by invited regional dance makers:

  • Choreographer Ryan Bailey ’16, performs a new work with fellow alum Clarisse Lukban ’20, as one body with 8 limbs, a duet that encapsulates technical strength, expressiveness, and otherness.
  • Merce Cunningham‘s 2019 solo 50 Looks will be re-staged and performed by UMBC’s Jill Vasbinder, under license from the Merce Cunningham Trust, with guidance by Patricia Lent, trustee and a former member of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company.
  • Co-director Ann Sofie Clemmensen brings storytelling through movement, voice, and visual effects to the stage in two new works.
  • This year, in addition to BDP company works, performances feature two works by guest company Human Landscape Dance. Founded by Malcolm Shute in 2006, Human Landscape Dance is noted for its “ingenious choreography and staging” (The Washington Post). Shute’s dances are characterized by intimate portraits of people using touch to communicate, with bodies molding to create a collage of images.

Baltimore Dance Project, under the collective leadership of Ann Sofie Clemmensen, Carol Hess, Shaness Kemp, and Sandra Lacy, is dedicated to presenting the creative work of its leaders and invited guests. The company is known for edgy collaborations with composers, directors, sound artists, video artists, engineers, and technologists and the incorporation of visual media and technology with riveting dance performances. The company features outstanding professional dancers from the Baltimore area and beyond. Their work has appeared on the streets of Baltimore, in theaters, and on the screen and has been honored with numerous grants and awards.
