Creating Citizen Critics:
Using Adobe Spark to Engage Digital Communities

In her essay “Beyond the Aesthetic: Citizen Critics & Protopublic Classrooms,” Rosa Eberly proposes that classrooms can be transformed into protopublic spaces where students can access tools to become engaged and vigorous citizen critics. This workshop will teach participants how to use the free suite of web and mobile applications, Adobe Spark, to foster this engagement by creating content such as social media posts, web stories, and animated videos. Participants will have the opportunity to create a sample blog post that incorporates text, images, and videos. They will also explore the web story feature, which allows students to create magazine-style blogs or essays that can be used for public-facing course assignments. No prior experience is required to use Adobe Spark and the program can be accessed via your web browser or by downloading the app to your smartphone or tablet.


Bio: Eliseo Jacobis a Master Instructor of Portuguese in the Department of World Languages and Cultures at Howard University. Jacob holds a Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin with a background in Afro-Brazilian and Afro-Latin American literary and cultural productions. His current book project, Literary Counterpublics in the Americas: Race, Space and Citizenship in São Paulo and New York, is a comparative study between the Literatura Periférica movement in São Paulo’s urban periphery and the Afro-Latinx literary scene in New York.
