Domestic AwardeeThis year’s domestic award recipient is New Orleans Workers’ Center for Racial Justice.NOWCRJ was founded shortly after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, which turned the city into the largest and most profitable construction site in America. Federal and state policy measuressystematically excluded Black workers from reconstruction jobs, while newly arrived immigrant workers faced severe exploitation. Today, the NOWCRJ is a multiracial, member-led grassroots organizing force dedicated to expanding democracy, winning a just economy, and transforming the country by transforming the South.
International Awardee Our international award recipient is Derechos Humanos y Medio Ambiente (DHUMA).DHUMA is a human rights NGO that works closely with indigenous communities in the Puno region of southern Peru to promote social and environmental justice. Working on behalf of indigenous Puno communities, DHUMA recently won two significant legal battles that help communities resist the expansion of mining in the region.
