Capitalizing the B in Black: the Importance of Race

and Language -- new podcast episode features James Wright

The Intercultural Center at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) has a podcast called The Table. This monthly podcast unpacks questions regarding race, ethnicity, culture, norms, and current events.

James Wright (LLC Cohort 22) was recently invited to join Episode 4 of this podcast to discuss linguistic justice and "Capitalizing the B in Black: the Importance of Race and Language." James is UMB's associate director of the Writing Center and associate faculty member in the Science Communication Program at UMB's Graduate School. This episode discusses the impact of social media and the 2020 racial justice protests on the decision to capitalize the B in Black by major news outlets. How to incorporate inclusive language in academia is also discussed.
