Dean Search

UMBC seeks a Dean of the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (CAHSS) who will extend
its current momentum and build on its core strengths of interdisciplinary scholarship, innovative
teaching, and inclusive excellence. CAHSS embodies the best of UMBC – our faculty is both broad and
deep; it is committed to developing the best approaches to teaching and scholarship; and it believes
wholeheartedly that ground-breaking research and a relentless focus on undergraduate success can go
hand-in-hand.

The largest of UMBC’s three colleges, CAHSS is home to 270 full-time faculty members, 86 staff, 4,500
undergraduate majors and 1,300 graduate students. CAHSS faculty are highly-engaged leaders in their
fields, recognized for both their intellectual and civic contributions.  The college offers a diverse
array of 30 bachelor’s, 16 masters, and six Ph.D. programs, with many of those programs crossing
traditional disciplinary boundaries to provide fresh insights. CAHSS also is home to a number of centers that work across the university to promote important interdisciplinary research.

The Dean of the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences is a senior member of the university’s
leadership team, working collaboratively with the university’s president, provost and other deans to
provide a distinctive undergraduate education, grow research and graduate education, and build a
national model for 21st century higher education.
